The ocean takes up over 72% of the world’s surface and provides over 97% of our water supply as well as over 70% of the oxygen that we breathe. The ocean is vital to the existence of life on earth. With that said however, everyday the ocean is under attack by pollution, which is bringing it to the brink of disaster.
We have so much to thank the oceans for, however every year, over 8 million tons of plastic is dumped deliberately in offshore waste sites. Even though these offshore waste areas are hundreds of miles from land, this plastic, still finds its way onto our beaches and coastlines, destroying everything that comes in its path. Ocean pollution does not only affect marine life and their habitats, it can also have a huge affect on mankind. It takes roughly 400 years for plastic to degrade, however it never fully disappears, it just breaks down into smaller pieces, which can sometimes get mistaken by small creatures as food and inevitably, ending up in our food chain.
